Dear Sunnyvale families,

I hope you are enjoying the Labor Day Weekend and reflecting on the societal advancements made possible by labor movements and the contributions of workers. America hasn’t always had opportunities for children to focus on schooling. Dating back to the Industrial Revolution, child labor was widespread with children often driven to work in factories or serve as apprentices instead of attending school. Just 125 years ago, 1 in 5 children were employed according to the 1900 US Census. It was the efforts of labor movements that helped in abolishing child labor and I am grateful for that this weekend.

We’ve come a long way in creating conditions for children to thrive, but we can go further. That’s what the Sunnyvale Promise is about.

This year we are launching an effort to ensure that the Sunnyvale Promise reaches all students - and that we have a promise that is clearer, stronger, and more inclusive. By spring, all of you will have helped shape what comes next, and together we will be ready to bring the Sunnyvale Promise to life in 2027 and beyond. I invite you to be a part of shaping the future of Sunnyvale and learning more on our Sunnyvale Promise webpage. We are looking ahead to what Sunnyvale can be and need your participation in shaping this future. Join us on our Community Kick-Off on September 15th - RSVP today!

Our teachers will be ready to welcome students back from the weekend having had time to engage with the new Amplify CKLA instructional materials. We look forward to seeing the impact on student learning. I also want to thank and acknowledge each of the staff members that helped in distribution - it was all hands on deck in getting materials out to schools.

I want to end by thanking our schools for hosting amazing Back-to-School nights! This week we have our Lakewood Elementary and Sunnyvale Middle on September 8th and Cherry Chase Elementary and Columbia Middle on September 9th. I look forward to seeing you there!

Thank you for your partnership - together we will continue making Sunnyvale a place where every student, every day feels known, supported, and ready to succeed.

Sincerely,

Gudiel R. Crosthwaite, Ph.D.

Atentamente,

Gudiel R. Crosthwaite, Ph.D.
