Now enrolling in the Sunnyvale School District

Registration and Open Enrollment for the upcoming school year begin this February. Here is everything you need to know to get your student ready.

Does My Current Student Need to Register?

  • No action is required if your student is already enrolled with us. They will automatically move to the next grade or school.
  • Action Item: Now is a great time to visit your school office to update your emergency contact information!

New Student Registration

If you are new to the district, registration opens in February and continues through the start of the school year. Visit our Registration webpage for instructions and a list of required residency documents.

Key Dates for Your Neighborhood School:

  • Initial Registration Period: Feb 1, 2026 – June 1, 2026.
    • Register during this window to have the best chance of securing a spot at your neighborhood school.
  • What if a grade level is full? If more students apply than we have space for, we prioritize siblings of current students. Remaining spots are assigned via a random lottery. Students who don't get a spot immediately will be placed on an "overflow" waitlist.
  • Additional information is available on our Registration webpage.
  • Late Registration: If you register after June 1, placement at your neighborhood school is based on remaining space.

Transitional Kindergarten (TK)

TK is a "bridge" year between preschool and kindergarten, designed specifically for younger learners.

  • Eligibility: Your child must turn four by September 1st (Birthdays between 09/02/2021 and 09/01/2022).
  • Learn more: TK Program Details

Open Enrollment: Choosing a Different School

If you want your child to attend a school other than your assigned neighborhood school, you must participate in Open Enrollment.

  • Window: February 2 – February 13, 2026.
  • Programs of Choice: This includes our Spanish-English Dual-Immersion (San Miguel & Columbia Middle) and Parent Participation (Fairwood Explorer).
  • Note: If your child is already attending a school on an "Intradistrict Transfer," that agreement expires at the end of this year. You must apply through Open Enrollment if you want them to stay at that school.

Transfer Requests

  • Moving into/out of the District: If you live outside our district but want to attend a Sunnyvale school (or vice versa), you must complete an InterDistrict Transfer starting at your home district office.
  • Missed the Window? If you missed the February Open Enrollment for Fairwood Explorer or Juntos, you can visit the District Office (819 W. Iowa Ave.) to request an IntraDistrict Transfer.
