demolished down to dirt, construction continues at SMS

January 27, 2026

The Sunnyvale School District continues to advance the long-term modernization of Sunnyvale Middle School, with work progressing on schedule and safety remaining a central focus.

The project has moved into its next phase following the completion of two new, two-story classroom buildings. Abatement and demolition of existing Buildings B, C, and D have been completed, clearing the site for upcoming construction that includes a new sixth-grade classroom building and a new student union building multipurpose room.

“Sunnyvale School District continues its partnership with Blach Construction, and the project remains on track, with this phase of the project scheduled to be completed in the summer of 2027,” Myron Kong, Sunnyvale School District capital projects manager, said. “Construction has been carefully coordinated to allow regular school operations to continue while minimizing disruption, and safety protocols remain in place for students, staff, and visitors.”

As work continues, debris has been removed for salvage, recycling, or proper disposal in accordance with responsible waste management practices. All work has been completed in compliance with the Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) and applicable City of Sunnyvale ordinances.

“This work reflects the collaboration of many partners,” Brandt Burns, Sunnyvale School District director of facilities and operations, said. “We are grateful to our construction team for their professionalism, to the Sunnyvale community for their patience and support, and to our steering committees for the insight that continues to guide this project.”

District facilities planning is supported by steering committees composed of parents, staff, students, and community members, whose perspectives inform key design and construction elements and project priorities. These efforts are guided by the vision and direction of the Sunnyvale School District Board of Education, ensuring that facilities projects align with district priorities and long-term goals.

“We remain thankful for the continued partnership and engagement of our community throughout this work,” Gudiel R. Crosthwaite, Ph.D., Sunnyvale School District superintendent, said. “That shared commitment underscores the strength of our community and its collective investment in our schools.”
